Blog: subtle irony

ironyI’ve remembered one argument some bloggers have when they speak about me: he’s a nobody, meaning nobody ever heard about me, i have just a small audience that does not matter in the real world.

Partially true.  There are 5 to 7 million Romanians online every month on the internet and only 120.000 visited my blog. Small, very small.

But…and this is where i started laughing, if the top blogger has 120K/month and is you say he is a nobody, what are you, having only 1% of his traffic as a blogger?

There is an old saying talking about how, if you let a man speak long enough, he will make a fool of himself. True.

What I want from Live Writer

I really hope the great blogging tool Windows Live Writer will get better over time. Here’s my wish list, in case anybody from Microsoft is listening:

  1. fixing the jpg-png transformation bug
  2. an option for a cropped thumbnail.
  3. an option for choosing my own thumbnail name. wordpress has the -100×100.jpg naming system, wlw has _thumb.jpg system. so wlw is uploading two files instead of one.

It’s not much, but it will really help a lot of people.

Companies banning bloggers

In 2008, I wrote a review of a new phone. I am more of a journalist than a tech expert, so my opinion was from the consumer side, not from the techie who’s impressed by the accelerometer, whatever that is. The review was mixed, with good and bad, again, focusing on what the consumer needs.

nokia-e6Because of that review I neved got another phone from that company again. It didn’t matter I was right and the phone was a flop, it mattered i didn’t praise it. The company went and lost 50% of its valuation and i am now on the second phone from that fine company.

The question is: is it simpler to ban a blogger rather than send him a better product?

Easy jobs

In teh past few days i’ve been approached by people asking or offering me easy jobs. Consulting or seo or other stuff like that.

There is no challenge in optimisation. The real challenge is finding something new to write about. And doing it creatively and making people think and interact with your text.

WLW image transformation fix

I’ve reported this problem to Microsoft, but it will probably take another 2 to 6 months before i get an answer.

The answer is simple: wlw checks for an exif. If he finds one, the image is a JPEG, so he leaves it alone. If he doesn’t, he assumes it’s a PNG, so he transforms it into one.

The image on the left is transformed. The one on the right is not.
